Just because you’re allowed to do something doesn’t mean you aren’t an asshole for doing it. If you collect weird shit, don’t do it in public or the village will raise a shitstorm. It’s the classic idiom, “ The nail that sticks out gets hammered down.”

Guess what? Parking a military vehicle in your driveway is an asshole move. Nobody wants to see some big-ass war machine in their pleasant suburban neighborhood. It’s weird, and it freaks people out, and they’re definitely going to assume that some psycho gun fanatic lives next door. That means housing values will go down because nobody wants to move into a neighborhood with a gun fanatic who drives a fucking tank to work.

Yes, I know he’s probably not a gun fanatic, and he’s probably just a gearhead like all of us. But that’s a hell of a first impression to dispel, and no potential homeowner is going to take the time to meet their psycho new neighbor. Instead, they’re just going to move into a neighborhood with normal people. So obviously his neighbors are pissed and grasping at every possible straw to make him behave.

I don’t care if it’s an army truck, firetruck, airplane, boat, trailer, etc. It’s weird, and nobody wants to live next to a weirdo. Stop being an asshole and keep your weirdness under wraps like the rest of us.

And yes, the “commercial vehicle” ordinance is a load of BS given the truck’s current use/owner, but I have absolutely zero sympathy for this guy. Don’t rub against the grain and then complain when you get a splinter.

Guess what? Parking a military vehicle in your driveway is an asshole move.

Unsure if serious. Pretty sure you’re posting to the wrong group. Unless he’s in a deed restricted community, the neighbors can fuck off. It’s an M35, not a tank. There are a billion of them and private ownership of them is common.

Kind of a hot take, but that’s what the Internet is for.

I have mixed feelings here. On one hand, it seems totally innocuous to have that vehicle on your personal property. I would rather look at a functioning M35 every day than my former neighbors donked caprice with shitty flaking paint, always one flat tire, and expired out of state tags. On the other hand, it’s a rather large vehicle that does look kind of odd in a residential area. I live around a bunch of old folks who complained to each other about the new neighbors yellow/orange focus ST being an offensive color. *shrug*

Be it a military truck, an RV or a semi-truck, I would not be happy either... It’s freaking huge and it’s pretty much the only thing you see when you enter the neighborhood. I don’t wouldn’t want ot see this every morning I wake up...

I do understand the passion for it, but rent a freaking hangar in a place where no neighbour will have to see that in front of their home. That’s what I’d do if I had an RV. It’s the normal thing to do if you don’t live in the middle of nowhere all by yourself.

Sure, a deuce is cool, and this guy seems to want to do nice stuff with it. But type of ordinance is in place to keep people from parking straight up commercial vehicles in their driveway. A historic fire truck is neat, a semi tractor would not be. Or what about a beat up produce delivery truck? Been there, done that.

Would it have made a difference if he parked Hummer H1 in the driveway? Possibly with the turret still on top? H1s are abundant. Maybe not with a turret but still. You can find them post military use and regular civilian use.

Some people have trains parked in their backyard.

Some people have tractors parked. Who the fuck gives a shit? Everyone is too fucking sensitive these days. boo hoo. Eyes hurt looking at a truck.

‘The neighbors can fuck off’

This is my general attitude. I’m seriously, seriously lucky that I don’t have any. If I did, I wouldn’t be pulling shit like angle-grinding late at night every single day, but if someone ambled up to me out of the blue and told me that I was ‘lowering the housing prices in the neighbourhood’ I’d promptly file that person in the ‘prat’ section of my brain and disregard most of what they say.

Now that’s a hell of a first impression to dispel too.

I’d be willing to go along with the claim that it counts as a commercial vehicle, if, IF they could back it up with the spirit of the law.

One of the things that was pointed out was that it classifies as a CV because of its weight. So is the street not built to handle that much weight? If he’s parking it in his yard, ruts are his own problem.

Another thing that was mentioned was its physical size. If parked curbside, it could hinder traffic since it’s wider than other vehicles, and reduces visibility too. But I haven’t seen anything that says he’s been parking it on the street at all.

I’m all about personal rights and property rights, but the thing about that is your rights end where other’s rights begin. When you start to economically impact others in a way that hurts them, that’s where your rights end. Your neighbors have a right to not have you drive down the value of their home. Park the think in your back yard out of sight and all is well.

If this guy cut the muffler off and spent his days revving his engine, then the headphone argument would make sense, but that’s not what’s going on here. It’s a truck. The guy likes his truck. It’s his truck, it’s his driveway. There’s nothing remotely asshole about that. I’m also confused about how owning an M35 counds as a weird hobby.

Potential homeowners jump to conclusions, and they won’t move in next to this weirdo. That’s means I’d either have to lower my asking price, or wait for the random Jalop to come house hunting.

Dont give people a reason to complain and you’ll never have a problem. This guy publicly flouted his weird hobby and the neighbors shut him down with some BS ordinance. No sympathy from me.

lol. We have a saying in France: “Your freedom stops where other’s begin”. It’s not up to you to impose on others what they have to see and deal with everyday. RV’s that block the sun up until 9am don’t have their place in a neighborhood of any kind, unless people around you are fine with it. According to your logic, up to me to use my property, in the middle of a quiet neighborhood to stock old VCR recorders... Thousands of them! Walls of VCRs!! How about a purple house with balloons and clowns running around right next to Claude Monet’s house and garden??

Yes, absolutely. If you wanted to stack VCRs around your property, go for it as long as it’s not a safety hazard. This is a truck. The other way of looking at “your freedom stops where other’s begin” is that the neighbors’ freedom to do something about it should stop when his ability to own his property gets infringed upon. M35s are stupid cheap. The assumption that this guy can afford to park it elsewhere is daft.

Exactly. I live in a small very suburban NJ neighborhood built in the 50s. The houses are right on top of one another. Most the lots are .25 acre or less. I’d be pissed if my neighbor parked their massive 6 wheeler right next to my house - even if it’s on their property.

On the other hand I have friends in Upstate NY that have hundreds of acres. They have massive trucks, gun ranges, farm animals, you name it. Because their neighbors aren’t right on top of them.

Have some common decency to your neighbors. Not all neighborhoods are suited for giant military vehicles.

Non-safety related city ordinances I’m entirely opposed to. HOAs are a different scenario and I don’t really care about them because they’re perfect for keeping annoying suburbanite killjoys in their safe space away from signs of human progress and it’s clear that you’re moving into a place where those restrictions are in place. If this person lived in a community with one, I’d be on the neighbor’s side. He doens’t, so I’m not.

What I’m not getting is the sheer number of people who think life should be without compromises because of their perceived “rights”...

This guy was in a gray area and knew it, and now is suffering the consequences. The point isn’t whether this law is “right”...its whether he was following the aforementioned law.

If he has a problem with the law, he, and others in his locale who agree with him, need to rally together and enact change. Or, he can move...

Yeah, yeah, I know, its HIS property, he should be able to do what he wants on his property. WELL, his property is subject to local ordinances (which exist for a reason), which goes back to the whole compromises thing. If having the truck a few hundred feet away from him at any time is that important, then he needs to live somewhere where that is allowed.

The point is, this guy seems like he had a “ask for forgiveness, not permission” mentality, and now is looking to have the world compromise for him, instead the other way around.

Just hang some sort of protest sign on it and it’s becomes free speech. We have this asshole in Tampa parking this in front of his house and driving it around town all day, every day. (Warning, the link contains words/pictures that may offend some people. The whole situation makes no sense, especially because the guy refuses to explain exactly what it is that he’s trying to accomplish.)

http://www.liberalmountain.com/us-news/confusing-protest-nigger-racing-home-depot

The city can do virtually nothing about it.

Now, as far as my own opinions about parking a giant military truck or firetruck or whatnot in front of your house... just use some common sense. If it looks totally out of place, maybe you should park it somewhere else. But sometimes you get situations that make no sense at all, like large plain trailers/haulers, RVs, and buses. I’m sure most of these situations could be resolved/avoided if people just stopped being assholes for a few minutes. Go over and say hi to the guy who just brought home the the race car hauler before you start leaving passive-aggressive notes in the mailbox. Or if you plan on buying something like that, spend a few months buttering up the neighbors. Invite them to cookouts, mow their lawn a few times... and when you bring it home, how can they be mad at you?

Just because it’s somewhat related... HOAs. Fuck ‘em! I lived with a friend once for a few months after a breakup. The neighborhood was nice, but not fancy. Just regular old suburbs. In fact, it was just one street that looped back out to the main road. It had maybe 40 houses. It had it’s own HOA. The only rule they enforced was “Pick-up trucks without toppers must be parked in the garage overnight.” They were draconian about it. These homes were build in the early 1980s. Most modern, full sized trucks wouldn’t fit in the garages. The homeowners were starting a revolt. Some had accrued lots of fines while fighting to overturn the rule. That was some bullshit. The reason for the rule had something to do with breaking in to houses; how easy it was to remove large items from a house and to just toss them in the open bed of a truck in the middle of the night. I fail to see the logic.

Anyway, that’s my two cents worth. Sorry for the link to the asshole. Didn’t mean to offend anyone.

Wow, you appear to think that “weird” is an inherently bad thing that needs to be hidden from the world.

Fuck that.

If what I am doing is legally permitted by the laws of the place I’m doing it, I refuse to hide it from the world. I’ll make basic concessions to not being an asshole (no engine reving or angle grinds late at night). However, if they are bothered by the very existance of proof that not everyone else is as incredibly boring and terrified of standing out as they are, that is their problem and not mine.

And if they try and make it my problem, you can bet I will fight it tooth and nail. Other people don’t get to tell me “You’re weird, stop being weird so I can pretend people like you don’t exist.”

Your logic is literally the exact same one that resulted in the bullshit “Don’t ask. Don’t tell.” policy. You are telling people they are only allowed to be different if they hide it from the world and pretend to be “normal” like everyone else.

Not in his driveway — has to park in his yard. Against city code. City disagrees he can keep it there. Judge disagrees he can keep it there. He’s had his day in court and lost. Nothing prevents him from moving someplace without ordinances/codes. Nothing prevents him from owning it and storing it someplace other than his yard.

Not likely, tbh. That being said, I live next to a train and am often being blasted by reggaeton from the cell-phone stand next door that thinks that being as loud as possible will make their business better. I’m also very, very sensitive to sound, so if I’m not complaining then nosy suburbanites shouldn’t be.

An HOA has an agreement in which the rules are clearly laid out and that you have to sign agreement to comply by. You also often don’t actually “own” the property in such communities. I don’t believe a city has the same right to dictate what people can do with their property and I’d love to see the ACLU go up against one some day on fourth amendment grounds.

It blows my mind to think that people don’t read the contracts they sign when they move into a neighborhood, or get up to date with local laws and ordinances before they make decisions like this.

And because they didn’t take the time to do that its suddenly a news story?

If you conform so easily to the whims of others, do you really have any passion or hobbies to begin with? Your argument is “If someone doesn’t like what you do, you need to stop!” as if the person who has a problem with it is automatically in the right.

Let’s practice a phrase here - just because you’re offended doesn’t mean you’re right.

It’s on the same level as Trump an his massive huge US flag on his property that annoyed all his neighbors. You’re not allowed to be utterly noisy on your property, neither are you allowed to be utterly stinky nor can you be an eyesore. Some senses are not worth more than other when it comes to pissing off the people around you. I have to be careful not to be too noisy... I have to make sure you don’t smell me from afar... Oh, you mean that 20ft tall clown riding a horse statue?? Fuck off, it’s on my property!!

Don’t be a pain in the ass... It’s easy, just rent a place for the toys you can’t park inside your home.

You’re still missing my point.

I never said you should stop being yourself. If you have a weird hobby, by all means pursue it. But if you do it publicly, some NIMBY will get annoyed and start making life hard for you.

So try to preemptively mitigate the public impact of your hobby. Don’t give people a reason to complain, and you’ll never have to stop enjoying your hobby.

Kinja'd!!!0

That’s the thing. I’m NOT worried about other people. I’m worried about myself.

It’s annoying if NIMBY’s start pestering/suing/litigating against me. I don’t like to be annoyed. Therefore I have the foresight to mitigate the public impact of my weird hobbies so neighbors have no reason to complain in the first place.

Actually, no, my point is that if you mess with the bull, you should expect the horns.

If you want to exercise your rights, fine, but don’t expect any sympathy from me when a bunch of NIMBY’s outlaw your precious hobby.

Anticipate that shit and preemptively minimize the public impact of your hobby so they don’t complain in the first place. It’s never good to be in the position of asking for forgiveness not permission.

If you’re OK with the legal battles and bitter neighbors, that’s fine, but you brought that headache on yourself.

Wouldn’t the truck rust just as much in the front yard? Does the house create a rain shadow effect that results in different weather patterns on each side?!?

Neighbors don’t care if you park weird shit in your backyard. It’s out of sight and out of mind. It’s not an eyesore, and it doesn’t effect property values. But more importantly for us Jalops, it doesn’t give them a reason to complain.

But this guy didn’t do that and it cost him his hobby. He followed your advice and he lost, so you haven’t offered a valid counterpoint to my argument.

But you’re still missing the point I and others are trying to make - unless your complaint has actual merit, it’s just hot gas. In this case, yes the guy was breaking some actual laws regarding the storage and use of an oversized passenger vehicle. The complaint has merit. But understand - If your complaint has no actual merit, then I will do what I want and if I want to do it in public then as long as it is legal your complaints mean nothing to me.

Actually, I’ll fire back at you - why wouldn’t you let your weirdness out in public? That bothers me. People who won’t be open and public about what they love concern me. I find people who aren’t too open and public about what they love, even if it is “weird” tend to be into some stuff that is actually illegal.

I mean if you’re fine dealing with the hot gas, then power to you.

To me, it seems like winning in traffic court. You still lose because you went to court. For me, life’s more enjoyable without enemies and without needless hassle.

What stands out to me about this guy is the fact that he was stopped by a BS application of a vaguely related ordinance. Nobody actually had a safety concern about an oversized vehicle, but they used that as an excuse to stop him. Had he just taken some minimal steps not to stand out then he wouldn’t be in this situation.

A bit of preventative maintenance goes a long way.

It’s obviously not a commercial vehicle. He was being an asshole, so they bent the rules to shut him down. That never would have happened if he parked his truck out of sight in his backyard or a storage facility.
